Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to pull the trigger on its latest pay-per-view fight (PPV) card this Saturday night (Nov. 19, 2011) live from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

UFC 139: “Shogun vs. Henderson” will be headlined by former Pride FC and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson, returning to the Octagon to wage war against Mauricio Rua in a potential number one 205-pound contender eliminator bout.

The co-main event will highlight the long-awaited UFC debut of Cung Le as he takes on “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva.

UFC 139 Quick Results:

Main event:

205 lbs.: Dan Henderson defeats Mauricio “Shogun” Rua via Unanimous Decision

Main card (pay-per-view):

185 lbs.: Wanderlei Silva defeats Cung Le via TKO (Strikes) Round 2
135 lbs.: Urijah Faber defeats Brian Bowles via Submission (Guillotine Choke) Round 2
205 lbs.: Stephan Bonnar defeats Kyle Kingsbury via Unanimous Decision
170 lbs.: Martin Kampmann defeats Rick Story via Split Decision

Spike TV Prelims:

205 lbs.: Ryan Bader defeats Jason Brilz via TKO (Strikes) Round 1
135 lbs.: Michael McDonald defeats Alex Soto via TKO (Strikes) Round 1

Preliminary card (Facebook):

185 lbs.: Chris Weidman def Tom Lawlor via submission (d’arce choke) at 2:07 of round one
155 lbs.: Gleison Tibau def Rafael Dos Anjos via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
135 lbs.: Miguel Torres def Nick Pace via unanimous decision (30-27 by all three judges)
170 lbs.: Seth Baczynski def Matt Brown via submission (guillotine choke) at 0:42 of round two
155 lbs.: Danny Castillo def. Shamar Bailey via TKO (strikes) at 4:52 of round one

Wow UFC 139 really outdid itself. This has to be one of the best cards this year. Good knockouts, good submissions and great fights. Wandy was on his heels in the first round against Cung Le but focused and came back with that Axe Murderer vengeance to destroy him. Joe Rogan said it was a bad stoppage but it looked justifiable to me.

That wasn’t even the cream of the crop though. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Dan “Hendo” Henderson decided they wouldn’t be outdone and were bitten by zombies prior to the main event. How the hell else would you explain how both men made it to the end of the fight? Hendo landed so many bombs that Hiroshima sounded the air raid sirens. But Shogun having zombie/terminator machinery stepped up and gave his best in stopping the onslaught and then tried to finish Hendo in the last two rounds!

It really was a fight you can’t read about. All of you should do your best to see this Shogun vs Hendo war. It was an unforgettable 5 round fight and a great night for MMA fans everywhere. Zuffa bless us everyone.

UFC 137: Results for ‘Penn vs. Diaz’ on Oct. 29 in Las Vegas

UFC 137 Penn vs Diaz

UFC 137 Penn vs Diaz

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to pull the trigger on its latest pay-per-view (PPV) fight card TONIGHT (Oct. 29, 2011) from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC 137: “Penn vs. Diaz” will feature former welterweight champion B.J. Penn taking on former Strikeforce welterweight kingpin Nick Diaz while PRIDE legend Mirko Filipovic tries to outstrike Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Champion Roy Nelson.

QUICK RESULTS:

170 lbs.: Nick Diaz defeats B.J. Penn via Unanimous Decision
265 lbs.: Cheick Kongo defeats Matt Mitrione via Unanimous Decision
265 lbs.: Roy Nelson defeats Mirko Filipovic via TKO (Strikes) Round 3
145 lbs.: Hatsu Hioki defeats George Roop via Split Decision
135 lbs.: Scott Jorgensen defeats Jeff Curran via Unanimous Decision

170 lbs.: Ramsey Nijem def. Danny Downes via unanimous decision
185 lbs.: Francis Carmont def. Chris Camozzi via unanimous decision
185 lbs.: Clifford Starks def. Dustin Jacoby via unanimous decision

UFC 137 was a great night of fights and although I was pulling for B.J. Penn, Nick Diaz showed that he’s a force to be reckoned with. Diaz fought his ass off and should be commended for showing up.

The Kongo vs Mitrione fight was tough. I can see why the crowd booed but that was a hard fight to call. I think both of them will be disappointed in their showing. They really didn’t go after each other as much as I thought they would.

Bigish belly Roy Nelson really put the hammer down on Cro-Cop. I love Mirko but I hope he really hangs up the gloves. He’s had a fantastic career and it’s time to stop now.

Oh and Scott Jorgenses had a great showing. Love to see the Payson boys kicking ass. Hopefully he keeps it up and brings some Utah county championships home.

Bas Rutten’s terrifying fight with a zombie

People always ask you what weapon you would use if the zombie apocalypse happened. Bas Rutten will now be my answer from now on. To be fair I didn’t know we could pick MMA legends. Besides think of all the ammo you’ll save!

Chael Challenge: Loser leaves town

Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen

Chael Sonnen submitted Brian Stann in the co-main event of UFC 136: “Edgar vs. Maynard 3″ tonight (Sat., Oct. 8, 2011) in Houston, Texas. As Joe Rogan began to conduct the post-fight interview, Chael had something else on his mind. A challenge of sorts and here’s what came out of his mouth:

Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck! Super Bowl weekend will be the biggest rematch in the history of this business. I’m calling you out, but we’re upping the stakes: I beat you, you leave the division. You beat me, I will leave the UFC … forever.”

Did Hulk Hogan and Rick Flair do this one already or am I misremembering? To be fair, I understand why he’s approaching it like this. He has too. After trying to beat up Anderson Silva for 5 rounds all he ended up with was a Spider necklace and a nap. But you can’t blame him for trying to make it more dramatic. He almost went the distance and was very close to winning the UFC middleweight championship belt. However, it’s starting to come off more as him mocking the sport than trying to sell a fight.

I do think that this will be a great rematch though and Anderson Silva needs an opponent so there ya go.

Gracie Breakdown: UFC 135 ‘Bones vs Rampage’ and ‘Diaz vs Gomi’

Rener and Ralek Gracie bring a great breakdown of UFC 135. I love these. They show what different kind of ways you can use a triangle choke in the way that Jon Jones had one on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. They also go into how you can avoid a Rampage slam from that same position which I’m sure Ricardo Arona wishes he would have done. In the end Jones would get a rear naked choke on Rampage to end the fight and they show different ways in which you can avoid going out in that position.

Finally they show how Nate Diaz was able to get that great armbar against Takanori Gomi. It’s always interesting to see the small adjustments they make in a split second. Great job Gracie Breakdown and I look forward to the next one. Also congrats to Ryron Gracie on the wedding.

UFC 141: Brock Lesnar vs Alistair Overeem trailer for Dec. 30 in Las Vegas (video)

That’s right folks. It’s really going to happen. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is making all our Heavyweight dreams come true. UFC 141 with mark the debut of Alistair Overeem and pit him against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. The trailer actually kind of sucks. Not very entertaining but this fight will be glorious. Brock Lesnar has had some troubles with illness but I’m sure he’ll come in there ready to take out Overeem.

The best thing Strikeforce ever did was get Overeem off that damn Heavyweight Grand Prix. This is going to be an explosive war and quite possibly could destroy the world. Maybe the Mayans were wrong and we don’t make it to 2012. Maybe the sheer magnitude and power of these Herculean warriors rips the earth apart and we will become nothing but dust for the cosmos. Maybe.

UFC on Versus 6: Results for ‘Cruz vs Johnson’ from the Verizon Center in DC

UFC on Versus 6 Poster "Cruz vs Johnson"

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to pull the trigger on its latest Versus network special in the nation’s capital TONIGHT (Sat., Oct. 1, 2011) from the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

UFC on Versus 6: “Cruz vs. Johnson” will be headlined between UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz and Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. In the co-event fight of the night, one of the heavyweight division’s shortest fighters, Pat Barry at 5′ 11″, will take on its tallest, Stefan Struve at 6′ 11″.

Other match-ups set for the televised main card include a welterweight war between Anthony Johnson and Charlie Brenneman, as well as a long awaited rematch that pits Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman. Wiman holds a win over Danzig in a controversial ref stoppage.

UFC ON VERSUS 6 RESULTS:

Main Event:

135 lbs.: Dominick Cruz def. Demetrious Johnson via unanimous decision

Main Card:

265 lbs.: Stefan Struve def. Pat barry via submission (triangle choke) at 3:22 R2
170 lbs.: Anthony Johnson def. Charlie Brenneman
 via TKO at 2:49 R1
155 lbs.: Matt Wiman def. Mac Danzig via unanimous decision

Undercard (on Facebook)

155 lbs.: Yves Edwards def. Rafaello Oliveira
 via TKO at 2:44 R2
155 lbs.: Paul Sass def. Michael Johnson via submission (heel hook) at 3:00 R1
135 lbs.: Mike Easton def. Byron Bloodworth via TKO at 4:52 R2
155 lbs.: T.J. Grant def. Shane Roller via verbal submission (armbar) at 2:12 R3
170 lbs.: Josh Neer def. Keith Wisniewski
via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 5:00 R2
135 lbs.: Walel Watson def. Joseph Sandoval via TKO at 1:17 R1

Well it was a pretty solid night of fights on Versus. But it wasn’t without controversy. Starting the main card off with “Handsome” Matt Wiman vs Mac Danzig was full of fireworks. Danzig showed up, not that Danzig, like he had something to prove. It really was a back and forth war. If Danzig had a few more seconds he might have walked away with the win. Although if Wiman had another round I think he would have put him Danzig away.

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson came out like his nickname suggests. He went after Brenneman and put his face quickly on the mat. Which actually looked kind of weird. I couldn’t tell if Charlie was hurt or just really liked the smell of the canvas. Brenneman got back to his feet and Rumble unleashed a devastating head kick that put Brenneman on his ass. Mario Yamasaki, one of the greatest refs, then called the fight and gave Johnson the TKO. That’s where the controversy lies. Brenneman was absolutely rocked but he didn’t looked knocked out. However, I always say, better to stop the fight early rather than late.

Then there’s Pat Barry. Poor HD just can’t catch a break. I thought he was doing very well though. He was started to get his range pretty well and then Struve just up and ruined his night with a triangle choke. Props to Barry though for trying to “Rampage” a 6′ 11″ guy that weighed in at 261. That ain’t easy.

The main event was cool and all but the fireworks were really on the feet. Demetrious Johnson should change his nickname to “Mighty Mouse on Crack” because that dude is crazy fast. But Cruz shut him down really well. When he was able to catch him he controlled the fight. But really I would have liked to see more stand up. It looked like Cruz was doing some fun looking Capoeira type dancey move things so maybe they should have the Jersey Shore music playing next time he fights. I think it would add a lot of flavor.
